The advantages of being the odd man out
I teach at a Catholic school. I love my job. I love the students, the parents, and my fellow teachers. However, I am not Catholic. So, every once in a while the students catch me a in a non-Catholic faux-pas.
For instance, my students were having a particular difficult time catching on to what I was asking them to do. Finally, they got it, and I said, "Halleluiah!"
The kids were aghast.
"Mrs. Mitchell! It's Lent!"
(You don't sing Alleluia during lent)
Oops!
There are advantages to being a non-Catholic at a Catholic school during lent.
1. You get great seafood recipes from the other teachers.
2. A lot of the kids have given up candy--no sugar buzz.
3. A lot of the teachers have given up chocolate--all the mroe for me.
4. The teachers who have given up chocolate or cigarettes or whatever else they sacrificed are crabby. This makes me seem much cooler and therefore more popular with the kids.
5. Friday fish fry.
6. The cold-cut tray is all mine.
Almost makes up for not getting the cute First Communion dress with the veil back in second grade.
